Why Do Breasts Lose Volume with Pregnancy?
Having a child is a life-changing experience for numerous reasons, some of which are more welcome than others. A common concern for expecting mothers involves the inevitable changes that their breasts go through both during and after pregnancy. Most women are aware that the breasts tend to experience a loss of volume and fullness throughout the body’s transformation, although not all individuals know exactly why such changes occur. Generally speaking, pregnancy along with the increase in hormones caused by gestation can lead to swelling of the fibrous breast tissue, as well as milk production in the breast glands. The weight of the breasts becomes heavier, and the skin starts to stretch to accommodate this change. As a result, breast sag can develop due to a combination of heavy breasts and loose, stretched breast skin.
After delivery, some patients’ breasts snap back to their original shape while other patients may exhibit a “deflated” appearance. This all depends on your skin elasticity, which refers to the ability of the skin to contract to its original state. It’s usually the case that the more the skin stretches during pregnancy, the more breast sag is experienced. Fortunately, breast sag and depleted breast volume do not have to be permanent developments, and there are a number of procedures that can rejuvenate the shape, firmness, and positioning of the breasts for long-lasting results that can appear natural. Breast augmentation is an extremely popular procedure designed to enhance the breast volume while restoring a more youthful shape and contour through placement of implants. This volume-enhancing technique can be combined with a breast lift to reduce excess skin and breast sag too, if desired.
