New Guidance From BSCC Regarding Breast Implant Removal

When it comes to breast implant removal, patients may decide to pursue explantation for personal preferences or health concerns. For women who elect to remove their breast implants due to medical or health-related reasons, new guidance from the Breast Surgery Collaborative Community (BSCC) may help narrow down the safest, most effective technique to extract implants and restore a natural-looking breast shape for each patient.

The Breast Surgery Collaborative Community (BSCC) is composed of a collection of board-certified plastic surgeons and breast surgery safety advocates, some of them also maintaining membership to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), Breast Implant Safety Alliance, and The Aesthetic Society among other national organizations. Recent findings from the BSCC offer clarity for women interested in removing their implants, suggesting that the en bloc capsulectomy — a complex explantation technique designed to extract the implant and scar capsule as one unit — is only necessary for patients with an established or suspected breast implant-associated cancer

Research from the BSCC also indicates:

  • The “en bloc” technique is only necessary for specific cases, as it creates a risk of breast deformity and other complications.
  • It’s unknown whether breast implant removal (with or without a capsulectomy) can prevent the future development of breast implant-associated cancer.
  • Patients who elect to undergo a capsulectomy should still keep up with standard clinical monitoring and breast imaging surveillance.

According to Scot Glasberg, MD, co-founder of the BSCC, patients should remain cautious of “…surgeons capitalizing on patients’ trust or fear to urge them toward the more costly and riskier procedure.” By keeping abreast of new research and conducting open, transparent consultations with Orlando patients, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Jon Paul Trevisani, MD strives to help men and women make well-informed decisions about their health and safety.
