Recovery Tips After Tummy Tuck Surgery

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a very popular surgery for men and women looking to achieve a flatter, tighter abdomen after pregnancy, significant weight loss, or aging. The procedure can achieve a dramatic transformation in your body contours, even offering functional benefits like reducing skin irritation and improving your fit in tight clothing. Since abdominoplasty treats the internal abdominal muscles as well as skin and fat on the belly, the recovery period can often last longer when compared to other body contouring techniques like liposuction. Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani, our renowned Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon in Orlando, lists several need-to-know recovery tips following tummy tuck surgery to help ensure a smoother healing process:

  • Rest in a slightly bent position (like in a reclining chair) to reduce any strain on your incisions. We also recommend sleeping with pillows elevating your upper body and the region under your knees. Avoid standing fully upright for about a week to prevent tension on your stitches.
  • Wear any compression garments as prescribed by Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani to promote blood flow, reduce swelling, and shape your new contours.
  • Go on short walks around the house as soon as you feel up to it to prevent blood clots and improve circulation.
  • Avoid lifting anything over 10 pounds (including pets and children).
  • Arrange for help with kids/around the house during the initial healing period so you can rest and recover without interruption.
  • Eat high-protein and antioxidant- and vitamin-rich foods, such as fruits, veggies, lean meats, fish, eggs, and legumes, to promote healing and reduce inflammation. Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol, as this inhibits your body’s ability to heal.

Recovering from a tummy tuck requires patience and care to achieve the best possible results. It’s important to closely follow Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani’s aftercare instructions during your recovery, as these guidelines are tailored to your personal procedure.
